Hot Springs, Arkansas is a cute little city located in the Ouachita mountains. It is known for the natural heated springs which flow right in the center of town. There are a variety of things to do! The area is very scenic with many hiking opportunities. If you need a break from the trails, plenty of family friendly activities exist as well. We traveled to Arkansas over spring break and really enjoyed the relaxed, low-key vibe we found here.
Things to Do
Bathhouse Row
Hot Springs is named for the natural mineral waters that flow in this area. It was believed that these springs had healing powers and so, in the 1800s several bathhouses were built along what is now Hot Springs National Park. We explored the Fordyce Bathhouse, which contains mostly untouched bath areas and exercise facilities where ailing ladies and gents would come in search of relaxation. It was so interesting learning the history of the area. The kids loved looking at all the antiquated buildings and equipment aimed at curing ailments of those who visited.
Garvan Woodland Gardens
The beautiful botanical garden of the University of Arkansas is a must do! The flowers were in full bloom and it was so relaxing to stroll along and enjoy the different areas popping with color. The kids loved running along the winding paths and exploring the children’s area.
Maxwell Blade Master of Illusion
Who doesn’t love a good magic show? We spent an evening at the Maxwell Blade show and it is honestly one of my favorite memories from our trip. The show is so interactive and family friendly! The master of illusion Maxwell Blade has totally mastered mesmerizing the kids in the crowd. Little C and Big E were called onstage and loved being part of the act! Plus, the illusions were really quite impressive, it’s definitely not your standard corny magic program!
Hot Springs Mountain Tower
The Hot Springs Mountain Tower is located inside Hot Springs National National Park. You can take the elevator up 216ft to the observation decks to see the expansive views of Hot Springs and the surrounding area. Or, if you are extra adventurous you can climb the stairs ALL the way to the top! The elevator was indeed out of order the day we were visiting, so were took the long route. I will say it’s a great way to wear the kids out!
Hiking
There are several small, family friendly hikes in and around the downtown Hot Springs area. It was fun to walk around Hot Springs National Park and feel that the springs are indeed hot! Well…warm actually. On one of the cooler days it was interesting to see steam rising from the springs during one of our afternoon walks around town. Being in Arkansas in early March, the blooms were just starting to make an appearance and the weather was mild. Great hiking weather for sure!
Where to Eat
Steinhaus Keller
We stumbled across this German themed restaurant our first night in Hot Springs. After our road trip, all our people big and small were hangry. Bier and brats is just what we needed! I highly recommend the sausage and cheese board, paired with the giant Bavarian pretzel. I mean you may never encounter a pretzel bigger than your head again, so don’t miss the opportunity!
Superior Bathhouse Brewery
This little brewery is the first craft brewery located in a US National Park! Even more unique is the fact that the beer is actually brewed using the Hot Springs thermal water. The tiny travelers will also not be left out since root beer is also made there at the brewery! Little C and Big E took full advantage.
SQZBX Brewery & Pizza Joint
Squeezebox, another word for the accordion, is owned by two local musicians in Hot Springs. The building itself was built in 1925 and was once a piano repair shop, among other things. We loved reading about the history of the old building and appreciated the musical theme throughout the atmosphere. Most importantly, the pizza and beer did not disappoint!
Where to Stay
VRBO
We stayed in a simple, but cute little VRBO rental. It was in a quite, residential area super close to town. My favorite detail of the house was this old piano. I haven’t played in years and honestly only remember a few tunes. However, it was fun to play a few notes. Little C even learned a short song by the end of the trip.
